For some reason I thought I needed a scratch awl.
I don't need one I have a few brought ones two steel scribes no make that three .
A home made marking knife as well.
Which is getting a make over next.
So this one is rose she oak plus mild steel.
She oak was taken to 1200 grit and given a few whipes of linseed oil.
Steel polished .
Over all I'm happy a few things learnt .
Not sure if I'm completely happy with shape of the handle.
But I do like the striking button .
That was last minute decision and I think it payed off.
Dimensions about 187.567mm long lol 7 inches in the old money

I am here. But I thought you were talking to the Tool Gods and I know that's not me. :U

I like the idea. I have something similar, store bought with a rounded handle. I would prefer to have a slightly bigger handle then the one that I currently have. How does the one you made feel in your hands?

Thanks guys for the kind comments and ye more to come working on a marking knife at the moment.

One does not talk to the gods of tools.
One just offers tools up and hope you are not giving all hell and furrier back and hope for the best lol.

The handle fits nicely in the palm of my hand I would say my hands are average size.

Not sure if you can tell in the pics but the flat areas are not flat they have a slight crown to them.
But with a tool like this I tend to use it more like a pencil any way. So the knob sort of rests above your hand.
So I think I may put this in the chuck and putt some knurling on the shaft it's a bit slippery.tho and it's a big tho I've never done that before used a knurling tool that is.
I also should heat tread the tip it's only mild steel.
So that it holds a keener point.

The striking button is more bling bling than anything.
But finishes it well I think anyway. As this is really just a scratch awl not really striking a tool.

Tool Making is a disease all of it's own.

Definitely harden the tip.

The scribe turned out nice, will the marking knife be similar? How are you planning to harden and what steel do you use?

Saws have been on hold for the past six months. I'm planning to resume sometime in the next week or so. I'm still working on hardening the plates but I'm going to try cryogenic treatment.

Ye I'm pretty happy with the scribe.
It was just turned down from a bit of mild steel bar.
Heat treatment will be old school.
Ie heat the tip to cheery red
And quench in oil.
An less I'm told other wise.
The knife will be different but similar.

Haven't done any saws for quite a bit.
But have some ideas going around in my mind for them.
Cryogenic treatment WOW.
How do you think that will affect saw sharping?
Will it be harder no pun intended lol to sharpen the saw once it's in service.
I've heard about it being done for all sorts of things,
But a hand saw could that be a world first?? There Rob
Stay in touch

For the knife try using a piece of power hacksaw, or an old jig saw blade. Better steel and shouldn't need hardening if you on't over heat it in the shaping process.

That's defiantly one option which I may use.
I have a few old demolition saw blades from work which I have been hoarding
But I'm toying with the idea off getting some A1/ steel bar soft
And threading the non cutting end
And inserting that in the mild steel handle
But still undecided really

I also should heat tread the tip it's only mild steel. I thought that mild steel has too little carbon to be heat treatable?
