Apricot Bowl

This is my 3rd attempt at making a bowl, and the first one I have finished,
My first attempt is still ongoing and is a Mallee Stump Bowl with lots of sanding still to be done. I only work on this one at my WW Club,

My second attempt is a very finely sanded & highly polished stack of fire wood. Hence the Pot Belly Mistake Rectifier in my shed.

Sadly, I had a bad catch near the end of my turning right on the top lip & I wasn't game to try to remove it as there is not much material left there & I wanted to preserve the shape. I thought I might have been able to sand it out , but Nah....

I still have a lot to learn but its a fun journey.

I loved turning this piece of Apricot, and I have a couple more bits to play with as well.

My Mistake Rectifier hide all my sins, ever the one that flew of the lathe in 7 different directions at about Mach 1.5, or atleast thats how it seemed at the time.

That's a bloody good effort for your third bowl. Yes, lots to learn but I would think you are well on the way to being a good turner.

Hey Christos,

I sanded it to 2000 & finished it with about 8 coats of Burnishing oil.

I haven't found a finish that I am really happy with yet, but I went to Carbatec (Adelaide) to by some Ubeaut Glow as I was told this is a good finish. Of the 2 or 3 Ubeaut products they had in stock, Glow was not among them. I bought the Burnishing Oil as I had heard of Burnishing oil before. Its ok, but I recon there are better products available.

I gave the outside of my first bowl a couple coats of burnishing oil & it looked great, but the sheen didn't last. Hopefully, with the extra coats on this bowl, it will keep on looking like it does now.

I actually watched that video the other night, & a couple of his others as well. Its a very good video for us learners & I am starting to get a better idea of chisel angles etc. I practiced it a bit on a pen yesterday

My wife wants a larger fruit bowl, so naturally I told her that my lathe (MC1100) is too small to turn bigger bowls so I would have to buy a better Lathe..... She told me she would buy a bowl. That conversation didn't exactly pan out the way I hoped :)
