Does anyone know if these are available in Australia?
Veritas Cyclone Lids (http://www.leevalley.com/wood/page.aspx?c=1&p=30282&cat=1,42401)

I have emailed Carba tec, and got a polite no, I am awaiting replies from MIK, Timbecon and The Woodworks.

I know that I can get the plans for cyclones thru this BB, I was just wandering thru the Lee Valley site and found the lids. As I only have a shop vac, these would be good.

carbatec have one (not Veritas) in their cattalog which they call a dust seperator lid, which I think is much the same thing Cat# DBS-1 for $32. For a shop vac check out Sturdees Triton bucket thread http://www.woodworkforums.ubeaut.com.au/showthread.php?t=17427

Hi Cagey,

I have one of the C-T jobbies, and it's not the same at all; it's just a bin lid with an inlet (100mm) and an outlet (also 100mm) set of ports, with no swirl action vanes at all.

However, having just looked at the Veritas design, I see no reason why it wouldn't be possible to make up a passing copy.

I'll advise on success or failure in due course!

Cheers!

I can't see why you couldn't buy a smaller bin and use the smaller hoses or use the big bin if you want.

Don't forget, the lid is only half the secret of the cyclone system. The funnel in the bucke is the other part. Those cyclone lids can be simulated by one pice of 90 degree elbow. It gets the air in the right motion.

I agree with the others, there are a lot better ways to go.

But to answer your question GPW also sells the JET equivalent http://store.yahoo.com/gpwoodturning/jet2stagdusc.html

No-one I know of, sells the Veritas lid in Australia.

I seem to remember the Carbatec one didn't attempt to 'cyclone' the dust, need to look at it again.

I don't know about Gary Pye's, but it would be worth a call to him asking about it.

As for the Veritas lid itself. I have one and am happy with it. I have, over the past months filled four 200 litre bins to the 3/4 mark - so I suppose that's 4 x 150litres, for not much more than an inch or so of dust in my 2HP DC dust bag. As I am in the process of moving my DC and separator out of the shed, the cycle concept becomes moot in my case.

I'm a fan of Vertas products. But when I looked at the Cyclone Lid when in Lee Valley the last time I was in Canada, I was not impressed. It's constructed of a lightweight thin-walled plastic that looks to me like it wouldn't take much of a knock to crack or split it. :(

I purchased one that Carbitech sells and have been very happy with the way it works.:) It's robust and provides cyclone action on a separator hopper located upstream to my Dust Collector. As long as I remember to empty it when it gets about 50% full, 99% of the larger chops fall to the bottom of the separator bin.

Grizzly gave me one whan I bought my 1029 dust colletor. I haven't tried to use it yet. I only use the dc with my tablesaw so I don't really have need to worry about big chips.

I've read mixed reviews of them in general. It seems that you could do a better job with your own steel bin and lid and some PVC. A lot of people seem to have a hard time finding a bin of the exactly the right size. It has to be exact, too, or you have to use a lot duct tape to get it sealed.

Trent the Thief,

I've got one of the veritas lids & like Burn I've emptied two 44gal drums with less than 2 inches in the dust collector bag. I've just placed the lid on top of the 44gal drum, no clamps or tape & it works fine, easy to lift it up & check how much is in the bin when the DC is off that is.

Thanks for the replies

Al - you never disappoint
Neil - I have emailed Gary Pye re a 2 1/2' system, for my shop vac
Gumby/Cagey - If I had any confidence in my abilities, I might give it a go, but someone has done the hard yards I am not going to spend time on a project that may cause the rest of my hair to fall out. :D

Thanks again
