Hercus 9 cylindrical grinder

Hi All,

I recently acquired a Hercus 9 cylindrical grinder and in the process of giving it a good clean and semi-restoration.

Unfortunately I have found very little information on this machine apart from a few pictures on this site (thanks Bob). I'm looking for any general information, operating manuals, and any tips or tricks in using it. I'm just a hobbyist but got a good deal on it and is complete as far as i can see except for a couple of minor things and would be good to put it back into use.

To be honest I'm not even sure how the large hand wheel on the right really operates. i know it operates the feed, but there is also an automatic feed i presume and some fined feed adjustments and stops.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Thanks for posting the photo of the 9. From here it looks like it still wears its original coat of paint, not the usual brushed on hammertone. I thought that the 9 was a simpler, more basic version of the 9A but side by side, it doesn't look that simple.

I have a Brown and Sharpe booklet covering their range of universal grinders. I'll have a look to see if any of the information in the book might be relevant to your 9. I'll let you know.

Hi Bob,

Thank you for the pictures and information, it is appreciated.

There are some differences between the 9 and 9A but they are similar machines. I can see some of the linkages are the same although vertical rather than horizontal. The overall feed adjustment controls are also similar. Some of the levers and hand wheels are exactly the same.

You are correct that the paint is in original condition. Although not shown in the pictures I can see it from the back of the splash cover and the electrical box. The only thing that has been repainted is the main spindle belt guard.

The machine was actually converted to a surface grinder. It had a magnetic chuck and and an adjustable column (fine feed) mounted on the spindle using the pre-existing holes from the wheel guard. I suppose it worked ok but the Y-feed would have been very fine and a pain to use except for small parts.

I will clean up the machine and see how it looks but it is likely I will re-paint it.

Do you know any details on what the original Hercus grey colour is?

Looking at off the shelf colour charts, Machinery Grey (White Night brand from Bunnings) looks fairly close. It is also available in spray pack so it's convenient for the odd touch ups or difficult areas.

I have include some pictures of the "surface grinder" parts and electrical box.

My Hercus T&C grinder has the cylindrical grinder attachment for it. Not sure how well it works though given the state of the rest of the machine.

Good to see you're finally coming round to moving the little H/V mill on to a new home.

That's what I thought in both need and space. Fortunately I'm using some warehouse space at work, and the need......well it was a Gumtree find and couldn't say no and it was local. I will send you a PM with the ad for your information.

BTW the grinder doesn't take too much space. Good luck with the sale.
