When asked the question of suitable undercoat for an MDF bookcase, a painter chappie told me to use PVA glue. PVA glue? As I had never heard of this process, I was not convinced and thought that it would be a messy process and how suitable to go under a matt folk painting outer coats. I had initially thought that Something like Taubmans 3in1 was a good alternative. But now I'm not sure. It just needed to be an undercoat for folkpainting. Any light for this problem?

Dulux and many others also make a primer/sealer designed for MDF. One of these gives the best results.

However, I have used PVA as a primer/undercoat for smaller items (never tried on anything big) and my wife has done the folk art over that. It has worked well. I water the PVA down and put on a couple of light coats.

A couple of tips:
- Don't drown the MDF as it tends to swell up and die.
- Check for any "fur" and sand if needed.
- Seal and paint all surfaces to stop any warping.

Hope this helps. http://ubb.ubeaut.com.au/ubb/smile.gif
