Sewing machine cabinet

My better half wants me to make her a sewing machine cabinet. Do any of you guys have plans for this. Would appreciate your help. SWMBO reckons it is time I made something for her instead of sawdust. Have looked at O/S designs but find they have different applications and fittings etc. Want something local.

Go to your local Spotlight or sewing machine shop and get a Horn brochure!

Once you've done that, decide which model is best, then take a cold shower and see if the Horn one represents value or not! Then copy it! :o

I will probably do one some time next decade, particularly since the new machine is so HUGE that it won't fit in the lift bit now. The moveable, unfolding cabinets are fantastic. (They work for us at least!)

Since that last thread I've found the best value machine lift around http://www.leevalley.com/hardware/page.aspx?c=3&p=41821&cat=3,48759 and I'm guessing you'd get it here by sea for less than $200Aus.

You could get real flash and have an electric powered lifting mechinism thats remote controled! Hafele cat page 1245, hate too see the price tho...

Thanks everyone, but this is getting scary. Looks like the local opshop might be the go. Buy the cabinet and buggered machine, turf buggered machine and refurbish cabinet. Done deal! It sure helps to go to the forum.

When we had the laundry remodelled in our other house (we are not in it at the moment so I can't give you measurements) we had a built in cupboard made wider than usual. bench top lower than a table, drawers down the side and doors on the part containing the sewing machine were those like on a TV cabinet that open then slide in the sides out of the way. Of couse there is plenty of light in the cupboard and a gap between the back wall and the shelf to take 1. the lead to the foot peddle and 2. any long material like curtains to get it out of the way while working on them. My wife misses "Her Cupboard" and can't wait till my current contract finishes so we can move back to it.David L

Sounds like a good idea to have the thing built in. I will have a look at that. Been to a sewing machine shop and took some measurements so now I know what I need.
