G'day folks,

I'm looking for one of the variations of the std. 7mm twist pen. This style has the tapered clip, which is black striped with a ball on the end. The centre ring is also a tad wider than usual, with a sort of a filigree on a black background.

I've tried looking in the usual places I buy kits, Carbatec, Gustec, Woodsmith, Carroll's and even tried the site mentioned here, PenTurners Paradise(?), but no-one seems to carry them any more. :( Odd, considering they were quite common not so long ago...

All I really want are the centre rings, to mix'n'match with other components, so if anyone knows of other sources it'd be appreciated. Should anyone want to swap rings or other bits, that'd be nice too. ;)

No idea but just a few more dealers that you most likely have tried but didn't list:
GPW (http://store.yahoo.com/gpwoodturning/index.html)
Timbecon (http://www.timbecon.com.au/)
Lee Valley (http://www.leevalley.com/)
Pen works (http://www.augumspenworks.com/)
Pen Making Supplies (http://www.penmakingsupplies.com/)

Plus another 27,500 sites for "pen making" under a yahoo search.

Yer right. I did try Timbecon, GPW & Lee Valley. The others are new to me. Thanks for the links! I can see a long night peering at tiny bloody thumbnails coming up... [sigh]

Ackershully, before posting I googled for "pen&kits" and got so many useless links that I gave it up as a bad joke. I'm sure there was diamonds in there somewhere but... well... if I turn a baby bobbin and drop it into the shavings I'd rather just turn another! ;)

Just as a matter of associated interest if you do search for pen kits then try either;

"wooden pen kits" or wood +pen +kits - enter it exactly as I have typed it, spaces and quotes included. This will reduce significantly the number of results and also get rid of most of the $%$%#$ sites.

Have a look at the following sites

Pens of Color (http://http://pocwoodworking.com/catalog/default.php/cPath/45_46) Sheila is the lady who runs this shop and is always very helpful
Arizona Silhouette (http://http://arizonasilhouette.com/index.htm) is run by Bill Baumbeck and again is another very helpful person, drop him an email...

Skew,
Can you post a picture? I think i may know the one you are after but need to see it visually. Anyway try the penturners.org site. It is another forum they may know.

Below is a box of my pens with a few "fat" 7mm twist pens amoungst them (second row, the first 7 are standard 7mm, the remainder are the fat ones). Not sure if this what you are after, but I get them from GPW. I just ring Gary and ask for the fat ones and he knows what I am talking about.

Hope it helps.

Excellent work.
Keep on turning,

Sorry about the confusion; I was (and am still) planning to include a photo but SWMBO is off on hols and has taken the camera with her... As the kit was available at every place I lurked on Oz's east coast I'd hoped it'd be common enough for most aussie p/turners to recognise my ass/2 description. My mistake.

The kit shown in DanP's pic is one of the variants of the kit I'm after, the only diff being the centre band which is a sort of filigree with black paint infill and is about 4mm wide.

Cor! Nasty thought! I hope I've still got one lying around to take a pic of!

One good thing about all this kerfuffle: I'm getting some nice URLs. :D

Is this sort of pen what you are looking for. If so we can get them for you, take about 2 weeks at the most. Let us know whether it is type 'a' or type 'b'

Are you speaking here wearing a PTParadise hat? If so, I'll move to normal e-mail thru their webpage for more info...

Email on its way.

BTW, I've since tried your search suggestion for kits and it made a BIG difference in the signal:noise ratio. It seems I'm doubly indebted... :D
