Hi , Im looking at a workshop set up where I can have single phase .
I have three phase machines though .
Im looking into getting three phase connected but I think its a long way away.
If that costs too much,
I could use single phase and have a diesel powered generator for the three phase machines, and switch power from one to the other.

Or

Is it possible to buy a single phase powered generator with three phase output ? What are they called ? is it a phase converter ?

I know about the VFD thing but don't think its practical with 15 or possibly more three phase machines.

Thanks Rob

is it a phase converter ?Yep, a rotary phase converter (RPC) to be specific. There is also a beast called a static phase converter.

Two questions for you.
What is the power draw of the machine with the largest power draw?

What is the power rating of the single phase supply to the shed?

Most are between two and three HP , power draw of them Im not sure ? I will have to check . with a guess they may be 7.5 Amps ??

The largest is a five motor tenoner , when fitted in to my current work place, the electrician ran a 32 amp line and plug to it . Mostly I use it with two motors running .
If I was to get into making house doors and windows then I would need the five going at once .

The supply which is single phase has five fuses , three at 16 amps and Two at 8 Amps , so 64 Amps. The electrician said If I go ahead with this we need a new power board / Modern, and it would have a ? 64 Amp cut off switch ? circuit breaker ? fitted .

The power would be coming in to that board and the house and shed are taken from that . The line would be going under ground to the workshop.

Thanks Rob

It's not clear to me yet. Is the 3 x 16A and 2 x 8A supply the one in the house or is it already down at the shed?

Is that supply board the one back up in the house or i it already down at the shed?

Bob, that's on the house, no workshop exists yet . If I buy I want to build the work shop.
Every thing in the house is Gas , the Oven , hot water , No Air conditioning yet .
The power to the house runs a fridge , a washing machine and lights with the occasional hair dryer Kettle , micro wave , toaster.
I dont think any more ?

I want the single phase to do lights [ LED ? ] in the workshop and hand electric tools , just hoping I can run one of these converters off the single phase for the Three phase rather than having to buy in diesel to do it and a $10 G generator ?

OK I get it.

In the shed I would suggest a 32A breaker for the RPC, 15A for any 15A machines, a 10A for power tools and a 10A for lights

Ok, Thanks Bob , so the RPC will run off the power I have and run my 3 phase machines .
I suppose with one of these set up it would mean running one machine at a time ? or with the smaller machines do you think a buzzer and thickneser at the same time? or how many can be run.
Up to 32 A"S worth ?

And do you know how the wiring can be done for my machinery with one of there RPC's. Im just wondering if I have to be walking over and pulling out one plug and putting in another ?

Or can they all be wired in and I just don't run to many at once?

I'm not familiar with RPCs so you will need to get advice on this.

The reason I suggested 32A was for your 5 motor tenoner.
Unless it is something like a dust extractor which operates near full load all the time, machines that are just idling draw <10% of their rated power. As long as you don't load up all the machines at the same time you should be able to start and run multiple machines simultaneously. Just don't get a bunch of mates in and get them loaded up at the one time.

You will need to get sparky advice about this
