I'm just looking for some opinions regarding floor boards.
I've just had my house completed and I want to put down hardwood flooring on top of the chip board.
An option was recycled timber as at last time I looked it was going at about half price as compared to new stuff.
The carpenter who's doing my neighbors house has strongly advised using recycled timber.
I guess from a tradesmans point of view there may be a bit of fiddling to be done + he claims the timber is prone to spliting when nailed and it is usually warped.
(for what it's worth I am aware that recycled timber may not necessarily be all the same thickness and the tongue and groves may vary also.)
I would welcome any information/opinions you can offer me.

p.s with a view to price, any recomendations on where to purchase this timber.

all the best for chrismas

regards

Gino

Gino there is a company in Geelong that specialises in recycled flooring. They redress all four sides and make new tounge and grooves. The timber is thinner than original but it looks great and is harder than new flooring so may require predrilling or hiring a Bostich secret nailing gun.
The company is Timberzoo , I am not sure of the phone number but it is probably in the yellow pages.

You haven't mentioned what state you live in, if you're in Vic I'd recommend Shiver Me Timbers in Williamstown (they're listed in the link above)

Cheers,

Justin.

thanks Jim, justin and Neil who emailed me.

Just letting you know that I ended up finding some New Vic Ash at a bargain price of $35 per square meter. After looking at some of the better second hand floor places the saving would not have been much in dollar terms and the finish the missus would not have been happy with.
Your imput has been much apprieciated.

all the best for Christmas and the new year.
