I've been looking at these on-line for a while. The problem with CBN is that not all CBNs are the same and it would be very easy to be stuck with a softer or weaker bonded wheel.

Not cheap, but worth a try. I hate using the angle grinder to cut spring steel.

Peter McJings have similar I have a pack I bought some time ago not to exy I think there was 6 in one pack and 10 in another two different sizes I gave 1/2 to son.

Ray, McJings are always an interesting browse, have not been in for a few years though. I searched on cutting wheel and also cbn and did not find anythin'. A general browse was also fruitless, guess I need to go in.

Are the ones you have suitable for a Dremel?

Peter thats sometime the case not everything is online been a while since I was there also. I miss Aladin's Cave (McJings) I found them on the table in the last isle towards the back left side near the sharpening stones and grinding discs.

These are similar to one I have Peter I have used one wheel 4 times so far twice on HSS

Well, the CBN cut-off wheel arrived the other day and I mounted it on a spare 4" grinder. It was on back-order and took a while....
It turned out to have a non-standard arbour hole of 10mm. So I bored it out very carefully to suit my 5/8" arbour.
In use it vibrated a bit and I had to carefully cetre it very accurately (within the play of the arbour on my grinder spindle).
Then it cut OK. A bit of a disappointment really on mild steel, I have to say. I tried cutting a 1/2" plate first, but I suspect it would have worn it out in the one (800mm long) cut. I finished it with a convenional 1mm thick cut off wheel whoich seemed faster but used the entire 5-1/2" wheel (Smith and Arrow).
Then I tried it thin wall RHS and it was a LOT faster than an abrasive wheel. So that is clearly what it's for.
However, a couple of days ago I wanted to make a large tangential shear lathe tool from 3/4" square HSS. To cut off the existing tool shape required a cuth right through the full 3/4" piece. That would have taken a whie and created considerable heat with a conventional abbrasive wheel. So I used the CBN wheel. That was both fast and relatively cool. I roughly cut the diagonal shape for the shear bit as well. Very quick and cool. Then ground it to final shape in the bench grinder.
My conclusion is that these CBN cut-off wheels are brilliant on HSS and thin section MS, but not at all ideal for thicker MS.
I'm glad I've got it now, but will keep it on the 4" grinder permanently because setting up exactly true was a bit of a pain.
I'll only use it for tool bits now.

Hi JoeCBN wheels are only for hard steel - high carbon steel is fine, as is HSS and any other hardened steel. Mild steel or unhardened steel will simply gum up the CBN grit. I would grind a little HSS now to clean up your disk.Incidentally, there is an update on my adventure with CBN wheels for flat work blades. Thanks for that insight!
I didn't realise the implication of using it on 'soft' steels.
I was under the impression that CBN would not dissolve into iron as does diamond, but it never occurred to me that it might gum up like some grinding wheels do with aluminium. Now I get it.
