WHERE CAN I BUY THIS TYPE OF GEAR TOOTH CUTTER

I've got a shaft I need to replace. It's got 12 gear teeth on the end and the OD at the tips of the gear teeth is 44mm so I'd guess the pitch circle diameter is around the 35mm mark.

Pressure angle "appears" to be 20 degrees.

Anyway, I'm in the south east suburbs of Melbourne, and wondering if anyone knows any shops that supply the type of cutter in the picture. I really want them to have one in stock so I can check the profile on my old shaft and see if it's the right one. There's plenty full sets for sale on Ebay but minimum delivery time is a week, and I want it yesterday. Plus I only need the one cutter.

Miller tooling in QLD may be able to supply,you sizes don't really confirm much,you could try either an 8dp or 3.25m cutter but these are suited for a dia larger than you mention,then again there could be wear,the dp cutter will be closest to your od size.

If it's extremely urgent... and you are handy with a bench grinder... you could hand grind a single tooth tool from an HSS blank to fit your original gear, then use it to fly cut the new gear. Yes it takes more time than when using a real involute gear cutter.... but then after all it just a 12T gear you need. Just do a google search for "fly cutting a gear" for some examples.

that's exactly right, I'm not certain of the size, and that's the reason I want to actually check the profile against a cutter, or even a gauge. Being a high load pinion, it's also possible the pressure angle is greater than 20

There's a section of the teeth where there is no wear at all so that is the original profile fully intact.

That's actually what I planned on "attempting" LOL, but I thought before I go that route I'll see if there's an off the shelf cutter available. It's a high load gear and the part it's driving costs a bit and takes several days to change out. So if I can I'd like to get the profile spot on.

What is the gear made from. If it is a hard type of metal a single tooth cutter might struggle ?

If it is an involuted profile you should be able to find the dp or m profile on the net so that you can compare the size,hercus has something on there site that may be suitable to use,should be able to find others with a little looking.

I'd try some of the second hand machinery dealers as they may have secondhand cutters that would suit. In Sydney I'd suggest someone like Moyle's. Not sure who does this stuff in Melbourne - Apex machinery? Probably worth a phone call to ask.

PS - I notice that c-tool (ebay seller) has an 8DP 20 degree pressure angle cutter up for sale at the moment although it is a 34 to 55 t (from memory). A third alternative is to get that and reshape the ends of the teeth with a file to match what you need. Not pretty but may solve the problem.

Thanks guys, that's the name I'd been trying to think of. They're on White St, Moorabin I think. I remember looking at their ads in Plant and Equipment, and seeing gear cutters for sale.

I'll give them a call tomorrow.

Mike (Morisman), I'll be using a case hardening alloy steel called EN36A. I've machined it before and it doesn't seem too bad. Once it's case hardened it will have a very tough core with a rock hard skin.

If you are going to Apex machinery in White St. Mordialloc and you don't have any luck, then try another machinery place called Austral Machinery on lower Dandenong Rd. in Braeside. It's 5 minutes from Apex machinery.

Apex; er, why would worry. I went there just after 2pm today, (Friday). Gates locked and NCH. Some lumps of junk lying around the front yard and has the appearance of being abandoned. If they are trading; strange way of doing it. No signs on gates with open hours.
