That's sad. Fell on its face most likely.
I have seen it happen due to incompetent handling when moving a lathe.

Who knows, but cast iron is brittle, and with a heavy headstock like that maybe just a fall off a pallet would do it.

Of all the Hercus's they could have dropped! If it was a model C i wouldn't give a stuff, but not a geared head like that (not sure on the model?)
