I came across this recent March 2015 safety recall for butane gas cookers known as lunchbox cookers .
It may interest you to read it and make your own determination about whether you should continue to use one if you have one.

We traveled all last year in a campervan with one of these cookers and never had a problem, they are cheap, convenient, reliable, compact, simple and I would have said safe. I think the testing involved putting a very broad cooking vessel on the flame for a long time so that the fuel cannister heated up and exploded. To my mind they are clearly not designed for that and it should be obvious to anybody with an ounce of nous. However, if they are off the market then I won't be using one again.

The ACCC recall relates to all sizes and configurations of white TPS and Orange Round infinity mains power cables. Olsent power cables sourced from Infinity Cable Co Pty Ltd are also affected.
The recall covers the 18 national suppliers responsible for 85% of all cables sold in Australia.


I'm really glad that I've had no electrical wiring done in the last few years.

I am in the industry, and worked on one or two of the cannister stoves way back.

I have been told that this is a beat-up from one of the Melbourne based certifying laboratories, looking for more work, in their own laboratory. (hard times etc)

I also have several of these portable cannister stoves and associated cannisters.

We manage a camping ground in S/E Queensland and have had these and the canisters for sale in our kiosk from time to time and only heard about this from a camper over the Easter week end there has been no notice about their sale in Queensland of which I am aware. You can still buy these at any outlet in Queensland that I an aware of. I guess we will have to be very careful in the future.

I love those cookers. Very cheap to buy and run, give off a fantastic heat, and I wouldn't go camping or on a picnic without one.

The press release regarding the 'hold of sale' (not recall) is very vague. Apparently, propane canisters are not included in this, and it isn't clear if canisters with the "CRV" feature are safe (these cans sort of slowly leak or disengage instead of exploding if they heat up too much).

The primary cause seems to be if you place a large hot plate or pan on the stove, which also extends over the butane bottle causing it to heat up and go boom.

I don't think there's too much of an issue if common sense is followed.

I'm really glad that I've had no electrical wiring done in the last few years.

When the suppliers in Australia were offered these cables, the price of them was a case of 'too good to be true'. Hence, my employer, one of the largest electrical wholesalers in the country, did not purchase any.

I believe that Masters was one organisation that purchased a whole heap of this cable (I think the majority, or certainly more than anyone else).
