I need to get hold of some Mobil Velocite Nr 4 spindle oil. It is very thin stuff (ISO VG ~3). Speaking with the local distributor they tell me they can only get Nr 3 and Nr 10. Nr 3 seems like it would be too thin (~1.5cst @50 deg) and 10 (~15cst @50) is too thick.

The oil is for my Boley 5LZ headstock which runs plain spindle bearings at 3,550 rpm. The manual calls for oil with a viscosity of 4 centistrokes @ 50 degrees.

Anyone able to shed some light on a local alternative or a supplier of Velocite Nr 4.

There seems to be a Shell oil called Morlina S2 BL 5 viscosity thats pretty close to Velocite 4.
Maybe give the Shell tech line a call.

I reckon a couple of liters would do it. I am not 100% sure as it has a sight glass but I have not located the capacity. It also uses drip oilers. I will drop you a PM.
Edit: I noticed you said Nr 3. That is the really thin stuff... so might not be a go.

Morlina S2 BL5 would do the job. Unfortunately Shell Australia only kept it for a single customer. The oil line reports they no longer have it and can't get it. What's more there is no alternative they could point to.

Not a good situation at all by the looks of things. I wonder if I could mix some Velocite Nr 3 and Nr 10 to get the right thickness... it would be a crapshoot however. As I have no way to test the viscosity in any accurate manner.

Is that the distributor up at Brighton? I have to go up there soon to pick up some oil for one of my sailing friends currently occupying my spare mooring. I could grab some of each/either & save you a trip. Let me know.

Roof job is done, trim & painting still to do. I'm having a day back on the boat project (and taper attachment).

Apologies for thread hijack Variant22, (I am unable to suggest any likely source for your required Velocite No 4) but I was wondering how your roof job was going Pete. Good to hear that it is a done deal, and I hope that it went well.

There is a website somewhere that has a calculator that will give you the proportions to get the right viscosity... I have used it to mix similar type oils before..

In my travels around town, visiting numerous shops, I'm noticing a lot of shops running Fuchs oils, where Velocite used to be used. It would be worth a call to them. I got some VG 10 out of them, when no one else seemed to have it.

I can check what series it is latter in the week. I'll be visiting a customer that seems to run all Fuch's, where Velocite is specified.

Regards Phil.

Likewise. I am up there on Friday to pick up oil (been sent down from up north) for the J&S.. Let me know if you want me to grab anything.

Thanks for the link. I was hunting around earlier and came across it. It now lives in my bookmarks... :)

Phil that is an interesting lead. I didn't know Fuchs did machinery oils. I see there is quite a lot of information on their website.

My problem is 90% solved in that the BP dealer was able to track down what sounded like the last 20 ltrs of Hyspin E5 in Australia. It is being trucked from QLD.

As an aside, I was looking up some of the crap I have on my computer accumulated over 13 years of internet browsing and found this..
