Ok so not only do i do wood turning but i also tinker in other types of wood working. Ive been looking at a drum sander as of late and cant justify the cost of one, and well i like to make my own wood working machines. So i was looking at plans to make a drum sander and trying to work out how i can do it, then tonight i was in the shed i had an idea, why cant i make a jig for my lathe???? use me chuck and the tail stock to hold the drum and then make an adjustable table underneath to put the stock through. So my question is has anyone done this to know of anyone who has? or again any ideas would be great

I first saw that idea illustrated in one of the early Fine Wood Working magazine issues in the late 70's. Much as you described but using a faceplate instead of a chuck. Best part is you can make several drums to quickly swap the grits as needed. Limitations are the the lathe's power to drive the drum so don't make it too wide unless you have a big machine. Go for it.

I did a small scale version on the drill press. A drum and a fence that could be adjusted in and out. I only required 2'' wide laminations and it worked quite well. No reason it cant be scaled up on a lathe. Dust extraction is a must however. Not just for your lungs but the paper will clog up in no time without it.

Have a look at the latest copy of Australian Woodsmith No. 117. There is a construction article on making a lathe sanding drum which will give you some ideas to incorporate in your thicknesser.

What a great idea - I shall make one myself I think.

Here is the one I made, mine is not as pretty, so I used his pictures and his link. httpwww.penturners.orgforumf30homemade-thickness-sander-48700
