Hello again all,
I have a loverly blue rubbish bin sitting next to the lathe full of shavings from blackwood, rosewood, jarrah etc. The question is what can I do with it?
I can put it on the garden ...
I can burn it ....
I can pee in it ....
I could put it in a rabbit hut ... (as long as they dont have the same reaction to the rose wood that I have) ...

But this is what I want to do with it .... will it work?

I wish to mix all of the shavings with glue and shape them into a bowl blank. I then wish to turn a bowl made up of timber shavings of various types to see what it comes out with.

Any suggestions or experience with this?

Thanks

G'day Stinker - Let me see if I've got this right..... You want to make some chipboard out of shavings, put it on the lathe and turn it into a bowl, oh yes and a whole lot more shavings, is that correct? http://ubb.ubeaut.com.au/ubb/confused.gif DON'T BLOODY DO IT!!!!

Look out your Architect is starting to show through. http://ubb.ubeaut.com.au/ubb/wink.gif Personally I would call it bordering on foolhardy and definitely very dangerous. http://ubb.ubeaut.com.au/ubb/eek.gif If you really must have a go at this strange folly you would be much safer using clear casting resin rather than glue. You might even come up with something rather unique.

ahh thank you for the reply Neil ....
It was just a thought ... a spark of creativity http://ubb.ubeaut.com.au/ubb/smile.gif

I think that it could produce some interesting results. I would agree with your idea of the casting resin.

Thanks

Put em in a heap in the corner of the garden (as far from the house as possible, tends to stink a lot[pun intended])and add a couple of kilos or so of chook poo per bin full, failing that, Dynamic Lifter. Wet and leave for about six months. Then put on garden as a mulch about 100mls thick. You will grow the best veges and flowers you have ever seen, and 'er indoors will be so pleased with you she will forgive you for all the time you spend in your shed!Honest.
Regards John H.
P.S. The reason it must be chook poo is that wood shavings deplete nitrogen in the soil as they breakdown and C.P. replaces it!

I put newspaper shavings on the garden between the plants - keeps the weeds down & doesn't seem to have any advers efects on the plants.

If you are able to have the shavings separated into treated and untreated, then set the untreated aside for...
small animal bedding - eg rabbit mouse rat chinchilla etc.
or if you know someone who smokes meat & fish let them try the different varieties of untreated timber shavings for fragrance/taste. I get some free smoked fish this way!

I recall seeing a picture of some childerens furniture that was made out of shavings and latex adhesive/rubber/stuff. The lovely lass siting on the said "furniture" looked a little cramped, but at least the stuff would be flexible when you walked into it in the dark!
