Two more D-8's

These are going to be a pair, one 8 ppi rip and pme 10 ppi crosscut. As with the other D-8's posted elsewhere on this sub-forum the plates are taper ground, hammer tensioned and cryotreated. The handles will be resin-hardened Peruvian walnut.

I've largely finished the first of these. Just a few touch-ups, polishing and the medallion needs to be marked.

Vital statistics are: Mass 590 gm. 22.125" at the toothline, 25" OAL. Saw-plate 0.035" 1095 taper ground 0.027" thick 1" down from the mid point of the blade back, hammer tensioned and cryogenically treated. Blade secured to handle with 4X stainless steel through blade bushings. Rake 12o and fleam 25o. Handle is resin infused Peruvian walnut finished with BLO, shellac and beeswax.

Here are the final products. Still need to fix a few little finish and line issues and have the medallions marked.

Vital statistics of #34 (lower) are: 8 ppi rip, 5o rake, 0.035" taper ground (0.025" mid-back 1" down from edge), hammer tensioned and cryogenically treated saw plate secured with 4X 304SS through blade bushings with three 9/16" ATW saw screws + 13/16" medallion. Peruvian walnut handle infused with resin and finished with shellac, BLO and beeswax.

By the way, hammer tensioning does minimize that ringing type oscillation of the blade that occurs in some post '28 Disston saws that I wrote about earlier. I tested this saw before and after selective tensioning and I was able to significantly reduce it with a few well placed hammer strokes. In retrospect it makes perfect sense because the hammering effectively shortens the length of the oscillators by creating nodes thus changing the frequency of the oscillation.

How true Rob .
It's just that I can't remember where i put my time lately, it's a round here somewhere must just be hiding .
Hence why I haven't posted any way out there saws lately .
But yours are looking great.
