Model Engineer Magazine missing Articles

[DSEL74]

To any Model Engineer Mag collector or Digital subscribers, I'm chasing some missing articles to a series I'm gathering. I have the start from the 70's the first 5 Parts and a few of the later 80's.

However there were more updates in the 80's, 90's, & 2000's that I'm looking for.

These were all later published as a book, "Building The Universal Pillartool". Then later again included as chapters in a larger book "Workshop Techniques". These books look really good to me but postage on a new book is 2-3 times the cost of the book and just to expensive. Hence I'm gathering all the original articles as PDFs for the Pillar Tool. Which starts out in 1970 as a Tapping Machine and Staking tool.

Save up your play money and buy George's Model Engineer's Workshop Manual. It is a trove of beautiful work and useful information and in my mind the best book of its type.

Bob, I'm on the lookout for a local used copy of both his books, should be a lot cheaper that way. In the interim still want to get PDFs if I can. also I can print the pdfs to get dirty in the shed and keep the book clean in the house.

Which of his books do you have?

I have already scanned the relevant G.H. Thomas articles from 1990 & 91.

I have saved them as .tif format - each file is ~2Mb. If you want them, I will convert them to smaller files then send you a PM with a dropbox link.

I should have the article from Model Engineer 1993 - will take a look in my archives. :o

Both books and the set of castings for the sensitive drill / pillar tool. In reality I'll probably never build the kit because the 13 came with one of these -

Is there much difference between Building the Universal Pillar Tool book and the section regarding it in Workshop Techniques?

In regard to the castings do you remember which supplier they came from? There has been a few companies selling them over time but they are not all the same in form. I like the original ones where the arms are more organic and dogbone shaped. I was intending to make my own patterns and get them cast, or go the fabrication route if cost becomes too much issue.

With the schubalin I don't think you need one of these UPTs. I think I would find one useful, but I mostly want to make it for the learning exercise.

I think "Building the Universal Pillar Tool" was incorporated into "Workshop Techniques". My castings were purchased from Hobby Mechanics.

Castings as supplied by Hobby Mechanics.

I did buy some PG 4140 for the column but it has long gone and I never got around to looking for belt material.

There are quite a number of variations in the interpretation of the plans for the castings.

These are the same as used by Geo.H. Thomas. Note the roundness of the arm section. I think these are the nicest looking ones.
The faceplate is blank and has a separate stub. The green drill in my earlier post uses these castings.

And these are the ugliest IMHO. They have gone for ease of making the patterns, rather than look of finished item.

These components would probably appear on eBay from time to time. A bit like un or half done Quorns.
