View Full Version : Wooden barrel for spirits - best tap

I store my rum in an 8 litre wooden barrel. The barrel was origonally used for port. It has a nice brass tap. BUT, unfortunately the tap washer is failing. It does not leak but does not open properly either.
When the tap is opened sometimes the washer sticks closed. Sometimes it just barely opens and only a dribble will come out. I have tried searching, phoning around for a replacement washer but sadly nothing comes along.

So, does anyone have a supplier of good small taps suitable for spirits?

My tap is this one - The threaded entry that screws into barrel has a external diameter of approx 12mm and internal diameter 9mm

Lyle,
Look up Roll Out The Barrel Cooperage at Redcliffe in Brisbane. Last time I was there, they had a few different types of taps.

Thanks Crocy, have contacted them and waiting reply. I have found a replacement, but it looks a bit industrial!

What's a tap doing on a keg? Lay under it and drink it.:D
