Have not turned or used a lathe for a couple of years.

But am getting itchy hands to do some small stuff.

And came across a Beaver/Vimarc in gumtree.

There was one on here for sale but without the accessories.

From memory it was $1000 which seemed fair.

Electronic variable speen will be real handy for for pen turning and general turning. Great to go from chisel to sand paper and back up to friction polish without having to change belts.

The accessories look good and all in all a great start out set up.

I always look for a deal. I'd try an offer around 1300 and see what happens. You can always go up. I believe the lathe was around $2000 new but others may be able to correct me there and give a better review of the lathe.

Lots of accessories and all clean looking. The price seems a bit high, but I'm looking at it from USA $.

My rule of thumb on used stuff is 50% of new for decent looking good working condition equipment. A little more for nice looking.

As I do bowls and apply oil finish while on the lathe, nice looking does not last long, so I lean toward ugly and needing a little work for 30 - 40% of new.

I agree with the 50% rule.

If you average the accessories at about $50 each new price as a guide. Some cost more some cost less.

That might given you a quick guuide to access the value of what comes with it.

Sorby are good chisels. Id only be tempted to negotiate on price because of the accessories. if you dont need or want the accessories then there are better deals to be had.

I think the ad said vicmarc chuck. They are one of the best.

As Dave mentioned...Variable Speed is great but if it has Reverse as well, that's a bonus.

I use reverse for sanding..that way I can sand over the top of the piece and the dust heads towards the back of the machine and not directly into your face
