I was given these old Collets and told they came from some industrial machine.

Since getting them home I have noticed that they are nearly all branded hardinge, and appear to all be imperial and have a third marking like 10 B&S, or CVA8.

Now to make a collet holder for these, I assume it needs a bore that matches the back ground dia. And a taper at the front with a nut that presses the Collets onto the taper to close it?

Im thinking to make a draw bar for them from one of these bolts. Fairly soft steel not sure if that is ok?

What are you thoughts on this?

Hi DSEL,
my thoughts are that you should send them to me :)
Some of them are marked CVA and or Hardinge - just like the incomplete set I have for my CVA lathe....
Seriously, if you have no specific use, I'd love to compare the sizes in oth our sets and see if we can complement either or both to make a full set and as close to two full sets. I have some duplicates and some gaps in my set.
PM me with your sizes and I'll do the same (PM you my sizes).
If they fit my lathe, I'd LOVE the hex collets!

I have no idea but it looks to me like I have a complete range from 1/3 to 1/2"

There are 2 square collects and 3 hex Collets one of which is my only duplicate.

I'll PM you the list in detail.

I guess we need to measure them to compare. They look slightly different to me now....

OK, measured and photographed my set and it's holder arrangement.
The parallel end is 13/16" diameter, the large end of the taper is 1-3/16". The length from the end of the taper to the end of the parallel section is 2-9/16"
Is that anything like your set?

Full set of hardinge collets here Joe, If your hollow spindle large enough the all you need to do is make a face plate to headstock, turn a threaded portion on it and make a suitable closing nut its the taper does the locating and the clamp back with the nut shrinks the nom diameter of the collet no need for any fancy issues. Cheers. still looking for that right piston and am sure right 1 here John. ps hex too and some duplicates Morey turret ex State rivers golden square used for war work oops still owned by the commonwealth so the plate [brass says]

Interesting the slots in the sides of yours are just a slit, where mine has a window and a hole at the top. Some of the small holes at the top are rubber filled.
