Forum Members Vote - Pallet Challenge 2015

I wish to invite the forum members to cast their vote.

Let me start by personally thanking the sponsors of the challenge Timbercon/Bench Standard (http://www.benchstandard.com/), Ubeaut (http://ubeaut.com.au/ubhome.htm) and Anonymous Forum Member for their support.

This years challenge had an extended time frame from the start date being as soon as members read the rules and replied I'm in. :U This gave some members more time and could have been of a great advantage, not quite as it seems.

Then again the competition is intended for a bit of fun and when you cast your vote I hope you cast it with what is in your heart.

I am happy to say that I have received all three of the judges results are in and along with the members poll the final results are in.

I wish to thank the members that registered for the challenge. Without you giving it a go it would not be so interesting.

I hope that it was just as much fun for everyone as it was for me organizing.

Thank you to Christos for organizing this and for obviously doing it during a very busy period of his own life! Also a big thanks to the prize donors and the other entrants, finished and maybe unfinished, you all made the challenge a bit more fun.

I appreciate feedback and I intend to put up a WIP thread of sorts in a week or so since I am currently on the road and my pics are all in the other camera at home. I'd like to point out now however that there are two incomplete, less than full size, pallets in the first pic and the second pic is all that I had left over making the cabinetry aside from the drawer bottoms, which were intended to be my additional 20% other materials allowance. I wouldn't have been surprised to have been disqualified for using too much pallet material as it was really approx one and a third full size complete pallets. I was rushed toward the end and the handles went on quickly after I failed to successfully turn even one out of the spacer blocks as intended. The upside is that with all the nail holes and other damage I can always change the arrangement after a bit more consideration and it won't be at all obvious. :U

The build was interesting and I'll do several things differently next time I make something similar, but I've learnt much and I also ended up with something usable that I needed which is a chest for storing turning tools and associated paraphernalia. :2tsup:

Finally, we can talk about the entries:U Congrats Fuzzie and Shane in the other poll, plus all the other placings. And thanks to Christos and sponsors. I'm kinda itching for next year!

I really wanted to make some kind of wall tool storage cabinet with inspiration drawn from the likes of the Studley tool chest. Never gonna be as pretty or complex but I just wanted the functionality and usefulness of this kind of shed furniture. It never got past planning stage because I got sidetracked by some coopering videos. I was hooked and wanted to do a small non water tight barrel, just for practice and looks, or to throw at monkeys. I needed to do lots of research then judiciously butcher the pallet to shape staves without knots, but geez....wrong kind of wood, no solid steel hoops, and after many attempts to get the thing closed I gave up and put an end to any idea of posting a how-to at a later date.

A cooper I'm not and never will be but it sure gave me an appreciation to the many who used to be and the few that still do it all by hand. I'm also impressed with what others can do particularly with crappy pallet pine. It's horrible stuff. But like I said, looking forward to next year but I might try a hardwood pallet.

FWIW, my votes went to Labr@. It was based on tool storage which was a theme I originally had in mind so I was jealous to see this piece put together so well. Love the inlay too, awsome job.

I also want to thank Christos who, once again, has stepped up to the plate to make our lives enjoyable!
After finally giving up on steam bending myself, the rest of the build was enjoyable although I couldn't QUITE give up the bending theme as my vote went to Canoaths chrysanthemum barrel!
I've been offered MONEY, you know, the legal tender stuff for the table .....a new experience!

I wasn't expecting any votes because the finished furniture items were so good, so I was chuffed to see a few, thanks fellas.:wink:

I meant to ask before about Fields' entry number 4. Fields if your watching, or anyone else, sorry I can't make it out but what were you making?

As I was organizing this and as entries came in I had to firstly determine if the item made was indeed made from one pallet. I also got some people comments on what and how things were made. I was happy with what Fuzzie mentioned in his mail about the composition of his pallet. I also don't think you used more than one pallet. The power outlet in the background shows comparable size of the item.

One entry that I received was not valid as by the shear size was bigger than a pallet.

On another note if the barrel was able to be completed I am almost certain that it would have been in the top two. Just going by the comments and PM's.
