I have sometimes wondered about the correct pronunciation of the various German tool makers names like Gedore, Dowidat etc - this video may help - not how I thought but he ought to know being German - look at about the 20 min mark if you don't want to watch it all:

A touch of OCD methinks.

Thought Gedore was from Seth Efrica, live and learn!

Hazet did seem to concentrate on the automotive trade here some time back. Stahlwille seems to have faded with the proliferation of brands.

Gedore originally were made in Germany then they started making some tools in South Africa then India too. The Indian spanners seem crudely made - the Sth African stuff is serviceable.

I have tried all types of spanners from cheap to dearest - it is hard to beat Stahlwille for precision and lightness almost like surgical instruments.

Beta tools from Italy are usually nice too but rarely seen here much.

Lately have bought the new Sidchrome 440 spanners and their new ergo ratchet spanners which seem modelled on French Facom designs - not like the good old days:

Having said that I have a throw-away tool set made up off odds and ends that I carry in my car and seem to do 80% of my work with.

It's hard to keep back the tears when you see what's happening to Australian manufacturing.

Hercus........gone
Sidchrome......gone
Dawn........gone
Holden ........gone
Falcon.......gone
Massey Ferguson tractors.....gone
and now Toyota just to name a few.

I suspect Sidchrome is now made in China along with Suttons and P&N

It's a vicious cycle, we all want more wages and in return, Australian made items become too expensive to compete with Asian imports.

I'm sure this is happening in other parts of the world. South Bend lathes are no longer, a fake product under the same name is now made in China, and is apparently rubbish.

What do our kids have to look forward to, playing with iPhones and iPads?

I'll get down off my high horse, made in Australia, and leave it there.

How we went from German names to this I don't know..................time for some more "medicine"
