Hi guys,
Started this platter today but not too sure it will
be completed it has some large bark inclusions
and a couple of cracks ,,! So I thought I would
take some piccy, s before it fell apart :o:o
It, s marked silky but i am pretty sure it, s
Jacaranda , the blank was 420mm and dry
so it will be interesting to see what happens!
any comments and advice welcome :2tsup:

Smiife,

Wrap the rim with 2 - 3 wraps of masking or filament packing tape and keep going. It lessens getting a mouth full of bowl sections, especially if you have mounted the bow by expanding the chuck into a recess..

I have done this with some cracked blanks, doing everything I could reach to finishing, move the tape to the finished part and finish the rest.

It looks very nice.

Hi guys,
Thanks for your thoughts very much appreciated,
I think wrap some tape etc might be safer for any further
turning, no turning today visitors turned up :~
I think i am becoming a grumpy old man!

Use some spray lacquer spray (NCL or similar).

Smiife,

I think it is just perfect as is. The light to dark contrast from inside to outside and the figure inside to solid color outside are quite striking.

I favor a soft sheen on my turnings, and people who buy them seem to also. Tastes do vary tho.

You might set it aside and look at it for a week or too.

I think a jet black shiny rim would catch the eye more often. If you are going to do it again might I suggest black blending into red on the outer rim. And very shiny rim.

I have just given you more work so only take this as a suggestion.

Hi christos,
I appreciate your suggestions, I did start with black and then put
red over the top and It looked really good but when I put on the
polish it went to crap!

smiife that's a nice JACARANDA platter. If you still have the bit of the tree with the pith in it, have a look at that. Jacaranda is the only (???) tree with a square pith. I have done a couple of black rimmed Jacaranda bowls and then used the long point of a skew to cut a "V" groove or two around the rim. I reckon they looked good, and I guess the buyers did also. What did you colour yours with? Just a black folk art paint from an art supplier. I think the colour was called Licorice, then I just put three coats of Penetrol Wood Oil over the top. Doug :U
