BobL 14th August 2015, 10:46 AM Some time ago a member posted something about ways to reduce scale formation while heat treating steel. I seem to remember something about encasing objects in stainless and tried searching but no luck.
Does anyone remember this post, or who posted it, or have any info about this?

Vernonv 14th August 2015, 11:43 AM I did some tempering of some firing pin springs and the information I found said to wrap the springs in steel wool and then al foil. Seemed to work ... springs came out clean as a whistle.

Knifemakers do this a bit for the very same reasons. There are are a number of knifemakers here on this forum and possibly one who maybe able to supply the stainless steel foil to wrap the material in.

Gameco stocks 309 high temperature stainless steel tool wrap. Perfect to wrap you finished blade or high tolerance tool to protect it from scale and decarburization caused by free oxygen during the heat treating process.

Bob you can run your forge really rich too which leaves no scale (i pressume you are using the gas forge?). In fact it is so clean you can do bareback (no flux) damascus in the right reducing atmosphere of a gas forge. Corin has a video somewhere....found it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v4AuZTyEo2o
Some guys make a slurry with the satanite and coat with that, it can crack and come unstuck though.

OK I get it,
I'm using mains gas not propane, but I can easily get that temp and that colour of flame so I will give it a go and see what happens.
