My version of study normally involves complete disassembly, then stick it all back together. Its amazing how many spare parts there are in these things that are not needed!

Its amazing how many spare parts there are in these things that are not needed!Funny that. Had a junior Engineer ohaul a power cross slide on a lathe once , didn't lay it out dumped it all in a bucket , she'l be right , I droped in an extra small gear wheel ,two days much worry , always laid jobs out properly after that.

:D Love it!

(BTW, I was also a Marine Engineer, RNZN in my previous life, so know all about traditional short & long weights, etc etc). I was on steamships (Leanders), so always enjoyed young cooks coming down to the boiler room to ditch gash into the boilers.

Stuart.

Love the link to the TFI site. Bloody good reading.
Just goes to show a slow .45 will kill better than a fast 9mm.

Hooroo.

I'm usually quite apprehensive with anything new. Means that its more than likely its going to cause me grief at least once if I don't understand it. Which means I'll no doubt have to fork out more money. basically. And if its new, it means its probably powered, which probably means Noise and maintainance and other hidden expenses.

Much prefer to wait a couple of years at least and see what everyone else thinks of them AFTER they've bought them. If they still like them, then I would consider buying one. Usually not though. Most things IMO are already covered by current technology.

I am tired of keeping up with "new technology" just for the fun of it.. WIndows versions cured me of that.. Imagine if anyone else released a product so unfinished and full of faults that they had to keep on releasing upgrades and patches just to keep it functioning!

And he is supposed to be one of the richest men in the world bahhh

i did something similar when i was in the army . we had a technician assisting a mechanic service teh brakes on a series 3 cruiser in a remote location. teh tech kept running around to see what the mechanic was doing and copying him so when they went for lunch, a suitable number of greasy nuts and bolts were added to the techs collection (dunno who did thathttp://www.woodworkforums.ubeaut.com.au/images/icons/icon10.gif. ) predictably the tech did a big panic when he assembled the thing and had all these spare bits, but i take my hat off to the mechanic who quickly realised what had happened and continued the joke. wel it offset the boredom for a while

Doug that only applies to FUBS not engineers.
Its who made the young cooks to go down that you worry about.

When i joined the army this type of thing would have you discharged (for want of a better word) immediately. then they started turning a blind eye (once again for want of a better expression) to it. soon it was openly tolerated, and inevitably made legal. i got out in 1997, and im so im not sure but its probably gotten past the stage where its encouraged and now either you are into it or you are out

Hey - don't knock it - that's a mighty ship there!

My baby is now a dive site. Must visit her one day (HMNZS WAIKATO)

I also served on the ANZAC class (TE KAHA) for a couple of years, but it isn't the same thing, when you can start and run the gas turbine by mouse. Nothing beats punching sprays, particularly when standing in the cathedral. I'm guessing only Ashore knows what the hell I am talking about.

Time to go find another young cook......

At least I left before it became legal in the RNZN. Unfortunately I did not leave in time not to see females on front-line vessels. No insult intended (though many will take it that way), so please don't flame me on this one.

(btw- CERBERUS is a ship, as far as the navy is concerned)

There's a couple of others that I know of Seahorse (http://www.woodworkforums.ubeaut.com.au/member.php?u=1933) and Simomatra (http://www.woodworkforums.ubeaut.com.au/member.php?u=6368) and yes I know what you mean espically in the cook strait or the backstairs passage.

Been out 10 years now and still miss moments , note only moments
As you say all changed now, but its nice to remember the good times

In 1984-6 ( around then) we were in Auckland with one of yours , many drinks over a few nights , much bragging etc, navy swapped our flag and had NZ flying for two days no one noticed.

But revenge is sweet, As your vessel left appro walked out on our bridge with cardboard cut out Kiwi , never saw deckkie move so fast to check both sides of funnel.

Ah i'm getting all nostalgic , time for bed.

A ships not a ship when it's a float.
Guess the WAIKATO is still a ship.

The trouble with life is there's no background music.

Isn't the Ceberus still warding off the Russian invasion on the shores of Beaumaris??
Then of course there is the good ship HMAS Leuwin(sp) and Jervis Bay.
May God Bless all who sail in her, truly unsinkable

G'day,

The only time I buy brand new technology is when upgrading my Macs, but that is only after a lot of research into new models and saving a bundle of cash.

In my game of advertising / design I need to stay abreast of new stuff and keep up, inclusive of my software.

On the other side of the coin I'm behind the 8 ball. We still don't have a DVD player, instead and for the moment I hook up my 17" PB to the TV or watch them on my 23" ACD HD display.

I put off buying technology until I no longer want it. Works for me.

Most of the stuff that I really, really, really want has nothing to do with technology.
Like 100 hectares (minimum) of land to farm, a pair of Clydesdales, a house (paid off), kids, a coppice forest block, a "river that runs through"... and I know rampant consumerism is not going to get me that. So I am a miser and an investor, not a buyer of needless things.
But thats just me and if having every techo toy that comes along is your thing... more power to you.
Although - I would like the technology to print Aussie bank notes. :D
I won't touch the Services and boys who like boys topic - yes I will, no I won't, yes, no, damn it......#$%^&*
