Old Wood Lathe.

Recently I purchased a very cheep solid cast iron lathe bed and legs to boot with plans for it to go nicely with a head stock, tail stock, and tool rest that I found at the tip many years ago.
When I first put it all together it looked like a bit of a mish mash but once painted up it started to really look like something.
I still have a bit to go in the way of small handles, miscellaneous parts and belting it all up, but I am pleased with everything so far.

Matty that's a great little project!! Wood lathes are very simple and its the simplicity that shows up with what you have done. Is there a Morse Taper in the nose of the head stock spindle? If you were to cut a taper in it you can then use "modern" accessories. I cut one in mine a couple of years ago. It was quite a simple exercise and it works great. Using the lathe's own tail stock to do the procedure makes sure the whole thing is concentric.

I do, but not that crash hot, one just be for it was about to be sandblasted.

Yes there is, but for some reason it is a very short morse taper, it basically came with a cut down drive centre.
You are definately right, I'd like to have it all revamped for a longer morse taper and a live centre on the tail stock.

Matty I have 2 reamers that cut the taper in my lathe. One coarse one smooth and are No 2 MT. I could lend them to you to cut your tapers. Maybe you could lengthen the one that is short.

Thanks Guys, its been a great little project, the tip run that day was funny, I basically backed over the parts with the trailer when we were unloading.
A good mate who was helping spotted them but didn't know what it was, we quickly threw the parts in the back of the ute.
One of the tip workers saw us but never said anything either, this happened years ago before all this recycling started, now would be a different story.

Hard to go past black and gold Matty...patina on the tailstock handwheel is beautiful.

Serpentine wheels, flat belt headstock and simple iron legs and ways really do make a picture greater that the sum of the parts.

I am pleased with every thing so far, all the little bits to go which I'm actually looking forward to.
The big plan with the lathe is to take it up to the "Wood Days" event in November and set it up from a stationary motor to run as a display.
My Brother has been involved with the event for may years now and has been encouraging me to come up and enjoy the fun.

Does any one know where the best place is to find a single original Vintage gravity fed glass oiler, I was chasing one as the lathe had a grease cup fitted and the sleeve bearing is better suited to a drip fed oiling system.

I see them regularly on ebay and at swap meets. They also occasionally show up at markets and old wares dealers.
Next Lake Goldsmith Rally is 31 Oct/ 1 Nov this year- sure to find something there.
Have the thread size on hand, even a sample nut in your pocket.

Matty - That looks like a great event (and a great cause), and I'm sure there'll be plenty of interest in your lathe.

As for vintage oilers, I've seen plenty go through ebay, and there's an engineering company selling new repro ones locally as well. In a pinch you could use some patinating fluid or salt/vinegar/ammonia on a new one. They don't seem to go cheaply on ebay as the vintage steam collectors are all over them !!

Andrew and John thank you for some great suggestions there to start looking.
Andrew I have been to lake Goldsmith many years ago and was amazed, I may have to make the pilgrimage once again.
I noticed on the bottom of your page you make mention some australian made "Premo" machines, I have a Premo four side moulder.
Have you researched their history at all, John has also shown me quite a lot, wondering if you knew any more ?
