That depends on how "eccentric" that you want to be.....as for turning your timber choice should be the same that you would choose for any other turned item as long as it would be safe to turn on multiple centres,to start with I suggest that you use any straight grained fault free blank and a face mask.

Depends upon what you mean by eccentric? Multi-center, multi-axis turnings, parallel offset axes, non-parallel axes? Spindle or face plate eccentric work?

I agree with Kerry, starting off with eccentric spindle work I would be looking for a nice straight grained timber that is easy to turn and also easy to sand so that you can fair & blend surfaces easily. Once you master the basics then try the harder timbers. Timber like white beech, silver ash, hoop pine etc has worked for me.

What I was thinking of was the 3 sided bowl with the clover leaf centre. would this be to advance to a beginner to eccentric turning?

Nice project. Any sound face grain blank will work.

What I want to do, is the one in the project book.
The scary thing is the wife watched the video and wants to do the offset stem goblet, when she has never touched a lathe before.:oo:

We all have to start somewhere. Actually it is perfect you can get her to make things and allow her the joys of the hobby.
