In the 1990's P&N made some shallow fluted roughing gouges, a huge one and a smaller one.
The reason I ask, I'm trying to hunt one down for myself.
I found the big one brand new which is abit big.
Any information would be great. Although I'm starting to think they are a thing of the past.

Chuck 1,

I wonder if the Supa Gouge would do for what you want, see F in the site below.

If not, and you can get to a store with a variety of spindle gouges, pick one that looks good for what you want.

I do mostly bowls and for the few spindles I do, mostly tool handles, I have used instead of a roughing gouge; a 5/8 inch bowl gouge, a 5/8 inch home made bedan, and most recently a used $3.00 half round bench chisel. When a used roughing gouge appears at the right price I will own one. I have managed without for around 7 years.

My $3.00 bench chisel looks about like this at the front:

Other than using a spindle roughing gouge on the inside of a bowl, I will use about any turning tool for about any purpose.

Something like this??? A continental roughing gouge / continental gouge

I note Ashley Isles state "They are shallower and should not be used for roughing. "

Hi Chuck1,
The ones that Moby showed wood be to light for the likes of myself.
I really like the P&N because of it's weight, & formed out of a round piece of Stock rather than a bent File shape Blank.
I also have the big P&N 40 x 10mm, ( which is also bent out of a far bigger blank ).
Have never heard of the one you are after, as I wood have bought one as well.
Wood Jim Carroll know anything about them, other than that you could ask P&N at Maryborough Vic. themselves. Gee, might still have one ???.

Thanks guys. It's simular to the Ashley isles one. From memory it's abit bigger than the Henry Taylor. .
Spoke to suttons p&n they said the only way to get one would be if a supplier had old stock hidden away.
I keep searching. As I got the big beast by chance in Wollongong. Still cost $150
the quest will continue!

Bruce Bell was a big supplier of P & N gear for a long time and his prices competitive. Perhaps he can help you with your enquiry as he may have some older stock on hand. These are someof his web pages-
