sanding

G'day all,
I am after a bit of advice on my first boat that I'm building, I'm sanding the fiberglass to prep for varnish and I have freckles of shiny un sanded bits, not lots but around two dozen in the deck, will these show up in the varnish, I also have a couple of small patches of fabric showing will these also show when varnished.

Presumably this is fibreglass over timber, with epoxy resin.

If you have sanded to the glass fabric I advise adding more epoxy in that area.

If you are worried about sanding through more of the cloth to get the shine off of those last bits to improve adhesion then you could just scuff them by hand sanding without a block or even use a scourer. You could also add some more fill coats of epoxy, squeegeed very thin but of course this sends you back to sanding the whole area again.

How about posting some photos? This may help other people give an opinion.

Thanks for the advice labr@ to my very vague post,I was tied and shattered at how much more sanding I have in front of me, and yes your right fibreglass over timber a striper, in the light of day I have toped the lower spots and given the fabric a coat of epoxy, what's a bit more sanding, I will try to get a photo or two soon.

A Scotch Brite pad (scouring pad) without a block, on the dents where there's still some shine, will knock it dull enough for the next coats (of whatever). When sanding the 'glass areas, try hard not to dig into the fabric, you're just breaking fibers, which isn't good if it's wholesale.

365547Thank for that tip about the scotch brite PAR, this is where I'm at as of this morning I've been sanding every chance I can get just about worn my arms out! she's starting to come to life, I'm hoping to be varnishing late next week if I get some free time before Xmas, I put a piece of poly pipe in for the carry handles this morning, I have had a bit of trouble uploading the photos I don't know what I did I only seam to get one at a time to upload, apears I got two in different places.

It's looking good John. Seems long and sleek -can you tell us a bit about the design?

labr@ it's an outer island designed by Jay Babina, I have changed the cockpit a bit from how Jay dose his, I just like the lines, I have used a few different timbers I originally planed to use a lot of paulowina but I had some supply issues, and I just loved the stripping part of the build I kept going with western red and sirean cedar a bit of silky oak, tassie oak and a strip of wenge.

I'm no guru but even I've heard of Jay and the OI design. Looking forward to seeing it finished and a first trip report.
