Does anyone know if the extender (

that allows the MkI honing guide to be used for sharpening spokeshave blades will also work with the MkII honing guide?

Don't need it with the Mk11.

Hmmm. Asked Phil Ashby this question at the Adelaide TWWW show, and he wasn't sure.

The short answer is, yes it works.

The longer answer is, it is mostly not needed except for low angle bevel up spokeshave blades and just a few others I've tested.

... except for low angle bevel up spokeshave blades...
Bugger: just the kind I've got:

Does this mean it is needed or that it doesn't work?

Oh no worries--I think.

Attached is a picture of the smallest, hardest blade I have honed. It is the blade from the LA spokeshave kit frm LV, which is smaller in cross-section than the LA blade I think you have--but I don't have one here to test.

The link goes to an album on my web site that shows more details. The pictures are too large to upload, so hence the link.

You can see in the pictures, I think, the settings on the honing guide itself, which is the red setting. The projection of the small blade holder was done by eye. It barely fits at the bevel angle I have, but it does.

If I can be of any other help, email me which will be the fastest way to get a hold of me (ask Derek. I'm suppose to be working <G>) or leave another message and I'll see it eventually. It's 1 am here, but I'll check back periodically before I go to bed.

***Edit*** In the picture album, it also shows the honing guide with a spokeshave blade from a LN spokeshave. It fits without the small blade holder, barely. It looks like the size of the LV blade, but I'm not sure.

MikeW: Those pics are reassuring. Looks like I should be able to use the old extender in the new honing guide.

Attached is a pic of my blade in the holder. It is ground to 20°.

Hi Zenwood,

Yes, it looks like that blade will work just fine in the holder and MK.II. Being ground at 20 deg may be problematic, but maybe not. I know they come ground at 20, but honed with a 5 deg micro / secondary bevel.
