After seeing Mark Baker (editor of the Woodturning magazine) demonstrate making one of these at our club spurred me into having a go. It has been on the tuit list for ages.

Made from mahogany, I was not to happy when the finish went on as it really showed the end grain darker on the inside. The wings are about 1/8" thick to give a lightness to them.

I also changed a couple of my scrapers to negative rake which I found easier to get a good final finish prier to sanding.

Nicely done Derek, and still expanding your expertise...
I had a first lesson on a wood lathe at the Dooen Australia Day long weekend GTG, an hour and the concentration plus back ache said "not for me";
so I'll just appreciate all those who can, blokes like yourself sir.
Cheers, Peter

Maybe the lathe is not set up to suit yourself as the height of the lathe set for one person is not a suitable height for another.
