6" Paul Call Jointer & Table saw - missing blade springs

Hi everyone,


I'm new to the forum, and to using a jointer - hoping someone can help. I just bought a 6 inch Paul Call jointer & table saw, and it's missing the springs to hold the jointer blades.


Would anyone know where I could purchase springs that would fit?

Attached are photos of the jointer, then the cutter head, then the blade. The photo of the blade has a part which does not fit this jointer, so if anyone needs this - let me know.

Don't know about the Paul Call particularly, but my recently acquired Qld made old Carbatec, that looks to be a similar vintage, has none.

The bar with the screw should push against the blade and hold it in the slot as shown here (https://woodgears.ca/jointer/knives.html). However if that knife set is not originally from the Paulcall jointer they might not all fit in the slot. The holes in the jointer head look suspiciously like an old HAFCO I tried to rehab which had screws through the head that squeezed the blade in the slot. Check out these old threads to see if it looks anything similar:

Thanks Fuzzie. Yes the bar with the screws does not fit in the cutter head blade slot. As you can see in the second photo - there are four holes on the inside of of the blade slot. So I'd say you're right! If I turn the screws, they'll probably appear through those holes to then hold the blade in place. Will give it a try tomorrow - thanks!

Hi Jayden,

I think you will need different blades to make this work. If you look in my "Big screwdriver needed thread" you can see a blade out of the head. It has slots that straddle the screws that squeeze the blade in the head. The blade thickness is CRITICAL. That blade was apparently a replacement and too thin, it had been shimmed out with brass to match the slot.

You need to make very sure the blades fit tight in the slots or they will come flying out the first time you fire it up. Very dangerous.

Unless somebody else here has a matching Paulcall and can supply measurements for the parts needed I think you have a challenge ahead. You will need to find the right length flat head machine screws, with the exact matching head profile to properly clamp the blades in the slot as well as getting new blades the right thickness with matching slots.

The screws I had cut down for my head didn't quite match, but I got over it by using some soft metal washers the deformed enough below the heads to make it work. But I was never happy turning it on. In the end I got rid of it and bought a Carbatec one that used the bar with nuts in the slot method to hold the blades.

Thanks Fuzzie. There seems to be others with a similar Paul Call machine, so hopefully they can help with measurements, or advice on where I might find suitable blades. I'll keep hunting on my own also. Really appreciate your advice.
