Been carefully sorting through some mixed boxes from an Estate auction.

Anyhoo. There was a large square threaded nut looking thingy. But note the tag which says it once cost sixpence and on the other side the Eclipse name and a picture of saw teeth just to make confirm its that Eclipse.

So what the hell is it?

Would be a big mother of a vice. That's a 1&1/4 inch thread.

I have had a guess from a dinner party guest which has some appeal: Central fixing nut for an industrial circular saw.

Sounds like an obvious theory once somebody else has thought of it.....

would that require a reverse thread?

Hi goodvibes,
Well to me it looks like a 1in. x 8TPI. which wood make it Whitworth.
We used those Nuts on a bolt that went through a SEC Pole to hold the Crossarm to the pole. The bolts had many lengths available.
They were very heavily Galvanised.
Those Nuts were quite good to me, as having a " Golding " Wood Lathe, made in Geelong, Vic. the Thread was 1in. x 8TPI, & I wood make Face Plates with a 3in x 1in. x 5/16th Gal. Washer.
At one stage I had no Welder, so I soldered the Nut to the Washer, & still have it today as a Momentum of the Past.
