View Full Version : Shopsmith 10E. Worth anything?

G'day All, I'm new here, though I have lurked over the years, this is my first post.
My name is Dave and I have recently started woodturning again having last turned as a teenager some 30 years ago.

I have my Grandfathers old Shopsmith 10E in aged but serviceable condition + a box of other attachment and parts that i need gone.

It's got some surface rust and appears to be missing some parts. I've given the ways a light rub with some fine steel wool and wd40 and got the headstock sliding freely with very little effort.
It has no motor. But everything that should move, moves.

Is it worth trying to sell or should i just scrap it?

If anyone has an opinion on the matter I'd be happy to hear it.

My late stepfather took it upon himself to renovate/restore a similar looking beast....for my benefit!. Oh jeez, it is still in the shed taking up valuable room. The only reason I have not thrown it out is in respect to him and his good intentions. They are basically a combination machine which does various functions in an average manner after setting up for that function. You could say they are a "jack of functions master of none" in the machine world. In fact my brother had told me some time later that the stepdad had referred to the machine as a "widowmaker".
I can say one thing in favour of mine and it is the horizontal drilling ability. That has saved it from the junkyard/ebay, however it is still on thin ice.
Looking at the condition of yours I would say do not bother doing it up and anything over $50 you can get for it would be considered a good outcome for you.
As there is no accounting for taste, you may well find there are fans of these machines out there. The above is just my opinion.

I would agree with AB. I would offer it for free to someone who would really like to take it on as a project.

I was going to say a mens shed but as someone who is constantly stopping our mens shed from taking on these sorts of "projects" maybe not a mens shed but an enthusiast if you can find one.

Thanks for the reply AB. Yes, sentimental value is the only thing that has kept it safe at my place. When grandfather passed there was also a bench top Durden and a big old Woodfast which my uncles took. I got the shaky old Toolex, which I'm using at the moment, and the Shopsmith. Tried to get hold of the Woodfast a few years ago but the uncle wasn't finished not-using it yet.
I like the notion of a horizontal drilling but it just takes up too much space. I did consider standing it up on a new base and using it as a drill press but it's a lot more machine than I need in a drill. I get by fine with the small bench top model I have now.
Might throw it on ebay and see if anyone bites.

Thanks Bob, I did consider the mens shed but my closest one has a driveway piled high with old machines, so i didn't bother to offer it. Might drop them an email anyway, see what happens.
Will probably end up on ebay for whatever i can get.

have you got any of the lathe components for it? I have an ER10 that was my grandfathers personal import from the US, but the lathe components were purloined when he died

Hi Drew, sorry for the late reply. I've been away for a couple of weeks.
There doesn't seem to be much in the way of lathe parts, just what's shown in the photos.
If you happen to be passing through Sydney you're welcome to take it away. Maybe there are spare parts you can use.

The last box is most likely they of that might have bits I'd be interested in... at this stage, wing be in Sydney until the end of the year when we head up to Forster for Xmas with the outlaws...
