Hello, until this week I have never used banksia for woodwork.
A while ago a chap gave me a few smallish bits of banksia from the north of Tas. He knew it was banksia because he had cut the timber. I did not ask him what sort it was at the time.
In the pictures it is the darker of the 2 timbers.
I also had a piece of what I guessed to be banksia that came with a selection of less common Tassie woods that came from a deceased estate. I thought it was banksia due to the grains features. It is the lighter coloured timber in the pics.
Here in Tassie we have 2 sorts of banksia. Banksia Serrata and Banksia Marginata. These 2 types are also found on the mainland.
So, anybody able to tell by the pics with any certainty which is which?
Of course there is a possibility that the lighter timber is not banksia at all but all the other timbers in that lot were Tassie ones so I doubt it is mango or anything like that.
Cheers

There are a lot of banksias and the colours vary from pinks through to dark red/browns. Basically similar to silky oak but a lot softer.
