Neil, a dumb question,

Is it possible to apply say CA or NC lacquer over Aussie Oil?

I'm wondering about its suitability to be used in the same manner that pen turners use BLO to highlight the grain then CA as the finish. I guess some one will try it.

Short answer. NO!

Long answer. NO!Use it in place of CA it is an amazing finish, unlike CA which is an amazing glue, not a finish which, when used as a finish (which it's not and was never supposed to be) will eventually crack up and break down pretty badly over time.

Aussie Oil will not crack or break down over time and if it does happen to lose a bit of shine over time can easily be rejuvenated with another hand rubbed coat over the top. If you haven't tried it, do yourself a favor and give it a go. You won't be disappointed. Not only that it will way outlast the finish of CA, will in the long run be much cheaper and you should get way more bang for your buck.

Thanks Neil, I hate using CA as a finish myself. It was more a hypothetical question on my part. I use either a wet sanded oil finish (from a competitor) or NC lacquer but I'm looking forward to trying Aussie Oil.

Used the polishing cream and the oils.. absolutely love them...
Even with 400grit sanding finish I've achieved quite a nice gloss... I can imagine wjat gloss sanding to 600 or 1200 would achieve simple to apply and as per instructions.. less is more...

Moby, I've used Aussie oil on NSW rosewood pen, Sanded thru the grits to 800 Abranet, then to 12000# Micromesh, eee then Aussie oil. It feels natural, unlike any CA finish.

Less is more, multiple coats to build up the finish. I like for timber pens.381599
