Whittle wood local common

I would like some local wood to a common supplier like bunnings where I can buy a small amount to whittle fishing lures.

What is a reasonable wood to shape and carve without the wood being furry? I dont need the wood to actually float what ever. Im particularly interested in the shape only with a nice smooth finish.

Any wood from Bunnings can be made not to go furry, it is simple a mater of leaving all surface cut and not sanding the piece. Many spoon and bowl carvers do not sand for sanding leaves the surface furry and as soon as it gets wet the grain lifts up. So you will need sharp cutting tools and then cut all surfaces cleanly. AS for timber cypress pine would be a good choice, Bunnings sells it, it is tight grained and very durable in water. Cypress pine is full of knots however since you are after small sections you can cut between the knots to get the lengths you need.
