Well, back in the workshop again and this time with a bit of very spalted beech. I wondered if it would take the forces of the lathe and thought that it was OK until it let go!! A fair sized bit bounced off my shoulder and I finished up with 4 bits. One bit still on the lathe and the other 3 on the floor!!

I collected them and checked 'the fit' and it looked OK so out came the glue. Then some careful power sanding to finish, it was nearly there, cleaned up and hard wa applied and this is the result.

The wood was fairly well spalted and not that strong hence the weakness and the 3D jigsaw puzzle!! I am really pleased with it though. One of the essencials for wood like this is a GOOD dust mask, because the fungus is not very friendly. Mine is a JSP Power Cap IP, positive pressure mask and face protection. Not cheap, but essecential for spalted wood.

The spalting won't go any further now and just like Blackpool rock, the markings go all the way through :D:D:D

Hi Jonzjob,
Great looking bowl fantastic spalting makes the repair's very difficult to find. Glad you were not injured in the separation.
Regards Rod.

Very nice job on both accounts!
To have the thing disintegrate then "rebuild" it and looking so very good at the finish!

Ta folks. I have to admit that the window in the 'firing line' off the lathe is always open when I'm turning:o:o

I was lucky because there were just 3 bits let loose and they were all a decent size. The one that hit my shoulder was the biggest! I tend to stand slightly off of that 'firing line' and as I was turning the inside it was even more so. I believe that I was taking liberties with it by trying to go too thin? I am not a fan of heavy weight bowls and bits.

After I had stopped saying 'golly gosh' several times I decided to have a go at a small end grain cherry dish. Only about 4" diameter. I had already turned a couple of small bowls from it and one had a bit of the heart come out due to yet more softness. So hot glued to my hot glue chuck, as you do, and turned the base. Whacked it off the hot glue and mounted it on my chuck. It turned well, until I got to the last cuts in the bottom and it went straight through :o:C. So I decided to stop for the day!!

Next day, and by then stopped saying the 'golly gosh' bit, I had another look at it. I had a nice bit of spalted cherry from another job. Just the bit that was left over in the chuck when I parted the job off. So I turned it down to a taper plug, remounted the dish and very carefully turned out the bottom to the limit of the chuck holding recess. This was also tapered, and fitted and glued the 'plug' so that it was flush with the inside of the chuck recess and proud on the inside of the dish. When it had dried I turned it down flush and sanded everything to 400 grit and then a coat of hardwax oil. It's only 4 1/2" diameter, but I like it and think it looks quite pretty??
