Hi Guys,
I am pretty new to woodworking but I am an avid computer user and am in dire need of a larger computer workspace for building and using computers. I have a good sized room with space for a U-shaped desk against three walls. The desk would be about 8 feet long by 12 feet long by 8 feet long. The longest part is infront of a couple windows so support on the wall is not possible. I am trying to figure out a way to create this large workspace that is forgiving to spills and other work related incidents. Here was my inspiration for this desk - 1 (http://starsnbars.mystarband.net/Mydesk.jpg) 2 (http://starsnbars.mystarband.net/Mydesk1.jpg). I am interested in having the angled corners like in the picture. I am wondering if any of you have suggestions for support / materials and computer programs that could help me plan this undertaking.

Thanks a lot!
-Alex

I'd suggest 1" thick MDF (manufactured board, customwood/craftwood) with a solid tmber edging (which can be thicker to give the desk a more substantial look), as in the photos. Buy it in long narrow lengths at least as wide as your desk is deep. The joins will need to be at the 'corners', again as in the photos. Joinery biscuits and glue, or demountable fittings. Seal the back edge to protect it from spills etc. The back edges of the desk can be supported by braces attached to the wall, the front edges by legs.

I'll second JB.

Being a computer desk you'll want clearance at the back for cablefeeds, etc. so I'd also add a timber edge to the back, mounted vertically instead, to provide at least a 1" lip that'll both prevent items being pushed too far back and spills running over the back edge.
