Hello,

i purchased this timber today and was under the impression it was red cedar as it was rough sawn when viewed. Since dressing it, it looks nothing like the red cedar I have worked with in the past. Can anyone help me out on this? I'm thinking its some variation of mahogany.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi John.G,

the modular rays on the quarter cut lent me to think it was Queensland maple. It's quite light for the size, and didn't really have a smell. It's well seasoned so I'm not sure if that places into it. I dressed the whole lot and it didn't let off much of a smell, I had a mask on as well but camphor and the likes you can smell through it.
Ill get some dimensions and weight it to work out the m3 weight.

Thanks for your input.

looks like pacific maple to me. the flat sawn and quarter sawn grain look pretty close for it and the sawn end is a pretty close match to what the stuff that I have cut is like.

Yep. Looks like it to me, too. Most likely Meranti.

Thanks for the replies. It's always an adventure buying unknown timber!
