in looking at this early DR design(looks to be plain bearing) I see the cranking table . anyone have a model ? I am under going a letter sequence study to add to Vann's thread. my speculation is models are develop in alphabetical order. my assumptions are that the first letter is Type/family ,second is model/size in that range , 3rd is drive type electric AC/DC line belt?

as a side I see a boss for a crank on My latter DR table

spoke wheels and no spring loaded upper guilds or rocker table stop. by the looks of this next one some of those features are added.

A good friend recently picked up this old Wadkin bandsaw, looks early enough to me and had a McPhersons badge as well.
We think that McPhersons may have done the motor conversion at some stage, the mounting brackets look typical of there early Macson Machines.
Jack as for the model identification, I'm not sure about any of it, my early catalogues state that the 24 inch is the DH
30 inch is the DN
36 inch is the DO
It states in the catalogues "A" was for Wadkin's electric- driven range, e.g. DNA

Hi Matty,
nice saw!

I see you are not the owner of a Robinson double or a Dominion combo:D

Jack,
I'll check under the table on my DR30 and post a pic if the mount is there.

Have fun,
Alli:)

Hi Rob,

I think it went for over $1200, it sat very low for a long time and then went crazy.
There was a lot of oil showing in the pics so i don't know what sort of condition it was in.

Have fun,
Alli:)

I assume this was the one down in the Hastings scrapmetal yard? I saw it down there almost a year ago when I went to pick up my Robinson thicknesser. The guy with the thicknesser told me about it and took me to see it. I tried to buy it but the guy wanted more than I was prepared to pay. I do remember it looked good and pretty complete for such an old thing

I had to take my daughters to a sailing regatta today - right across town. I decided I'd kill some time, old British iron hunting, by visiting two vintage rail groups in the area.

The first had some nice old English metalworking gear, but just about all their woodworking machinery is cheap modern-ish Asian gear.

At the second site they had the workshop roped off and mostly out of sight. Fortunately I bumped into a former work collegue (I knew he frequented the place), who was happy to show me behind the scenes. They had less metal working gear (two really old machines hidden under tarps). The woodworking machinery had a high percentage of New Zealand made gear (Tanner and Dyco), but again no British machines.

However, out back, in one of the storage sheds, I struck gold.

...Turned out to be 30 inch
I really would like to see an old early model 36 wadkin now !Here you go Matty, an early Wadkin 36" DO - DO 253 (test 5812), made before 1937.

397813 397816

397814 397815 Upper & lower guides.

397817 Note square hole for belt shifter (missing).

Unfortunately my former collegue was a bit perplexed at my interest in machinery when he wanted to show me the rolling stock. I could have asked him to open the roller door for photos from the other side - but thought it better not to push my luck.

Cheers, Vann.

Nice one !! Was it a big thing to stand next to , Tall ?
They look big in the Wadkin Pictures compared to the workers around them.
I was trying to read what they wrote on the defect note that says " do not operate "
Cant quite read it ?

It was quite big. Not huge like a sawmill bandsaw, but yes it was significantly taller than my 6ft.

...I was trying to read what they wrote on the defect note that says " do not operate "
Cant quite read it ?As near as I can decipher, it says:

397824

DO NOT OPERATE
Bus No. Band Saw
Defect/Reason: Not Electrical Tested
Name (Print): D. Emerson
Signed:
Date: 1/7/08

The saw came from a former Wellington City Tramway workshops - and was no doubt used in the manufacture and repair of much of Wellington's tram fleet.

Cheers, Vann.

Thanks .

The plate reads reconditioned by Wolfenden.
Until a few years back they retyred wheels etc.
It looks like a Crescent saw,
