View Full Version : Castors on a wood turning lathe?

Hi Guys

I have a good old Tough lathe mounted on a heavy wooden frame. Each time I need to move it I almost blow a gasket. :oo:

I'm thinking about installing a set of industrial castors with good locking mechanisms. Any thoughts?

Have a look at the H&F lowering castors. You press down with your foot to lift the machine off the floor and when it is in the new location you lower it back onto the floor.

Thanks Bohdan ~ that's exactly what I was thinking of. It wouldn't effect the height of the stand either.

Often wonder about putting my VL300 on wheels like this bloke.

Just be cautious about making the wheelbase footprint of the castors sufficiently wide enough to prevent the lathe topling over while you are moving it. All the weight is high up with a lathe (or a jointer) unlike tablesaws etc.

Thanks Mobyturns. The frame it's on has a fairly wide footprint as it is ~ much wider than the bed itself. Also I would normally only be moving it a foot or two, just enough to clean around and underneath.
