That is a shame to loose that piece. I might suggest a possible save as I had one of those's.

Remount this on the lathe with the top secured to the head stock. Clean up the bottom possible shoulder or tenon. Put up another piece to make a bottom part of the bowl and turn the curve, then glue them together using epoxy. You can highlight the glue line by tinting the epoxy. Then just finish this up as you would normally do a bowl.

It is far amount of work in order to save the piece. I have done this repair twice one that I did by accident and one that I made on purpose. The one by accident was a lot better looking then the one on purpose. :dunno:

David,

On the off chance you don't own one of these, see:

Buy Sorby Calipers, Double-ended at Woodcraft.com (http://www.woodcraft.com/Product/09N21/DOUBLE-ENDED-CALIPER-7.aspx?gclid=CJypg5fxhc8CFdgcgQodC0gKNg)

I use mine regularly and have saved a few pieces because I checked.

Sorry you lost the bowl, beautiful shape and figure.
