You should have a drift that came with your lathe (look for a long round rod). Inset this into the hole on the headstock on the left hand side and bash it, the centre should pop out and you can then screw on the chuck.

Hope this helps,

Martin.

I have the drift. Does this act like a stop pin to be used with the spanner?

Not quite, you insert the drift into the hole from the left of the headstock, then slide it in with some force and it will knock against the back of the spur that is inserted in the shaft. A few knocks and it should pop out into your hand (or onto the floor). After that, engage the indexing pin to lock off the shaft on the head stock, then screw on the chuck and make sure it's tight.

After that, disengage the indexing pin and MAKE SURE that you have turned your lathe speed down BEFORE mounting the wood in the chuck and turning on your lathe. Too slow and you can always bring the speed up, too fast and it's a visit to hospital.

You don't say which model of lathe so you may not have an indexing pin.

There may be a couple of small indents in the drive shaft - and a short rod that fits - to stop the shaft from turning when screwing on a chuck & are used in conjunction with the spanner... that's a different thing to what Martin is talking about.

What he is referring to is a long drift that is inserted into the end of the shaft from the LHS of the headstock (it is hollow, right?) to knock the morse taper out of the other end.

Gater88er,

When knocking out the spur drive, wrap a rag around it so when it comes flying out it will not hurt its sharp points or whatever it hits.

The tapered hollow it fits into in called a Morse Taper as are the bits that fit into the head and tail stock.

Put a few drops of light oil on the male end and stick lightly into the female and twist around a bit. Pull out and wipe off the inside and outside with a rag. If there is rusty residue on the rag, repeat. This will keep from writing in 6 months that your drive center is stuck in the taper and I can't get it out.

If it is a Jacobs chuck it should have a morse taper on the end of it and once you have removed the spur drive the chuck should just slide straight in.If its a carbatech lathe the drive shaft should have number 2 morse taper in it ( I own a mc 900 Lathe from Carbatech)
