View Full Version : countersink bits

I seem to be asking a lot of questions lately, without offering much in return (hopefully that's sign of your never too old to learn). Anyway enough time wasting, my query is can someone tell me where to purchase replacement bits for countersink bits? The ones that have a flat side to the otherwise fully round shanked bit .
Cheers.

Like these?

Drill Countersink Set of 5 (http://www.screwit.com.au/Shop/insty-bits/tool-steel-countersinks/drill-countersink-set-of-5)

These are what I have. Mine must be more than 15 years old and are just starting to look a little worn.

These have a hex end but also a flat section

Wood Countersinks Replacement Bits - Tools - IRWIN TOOLS (http://www.irwin.com.au/tools/drill-bits/wood-countersinks-replacement-bits)

Maybe you can order through Bunnies as they sell Irwin bits and pieces

When it comes to countersink's I'm not much of a fan of those styles. I reckon you are better using an ordinary drill bit to drill the holes and then using a cross-hole bit to do the countersinking, like these - 4pcs Chamfer Countersink Deburring Drill BIT SET Oblique Hole Cutting Metal Tool | eBay (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/4pcs-Chamfer-Countersink-Deburring-Drill-Bit-Set-Oblique-Hole-Cutting-Metal-Tool-/262514002343?hash=item3d1f0dc9a7:g:eS0AAOSwkl5Xfiwb)

There's probably cheaper sets out there and you don't need the titanium coating. This style cuts beautifully clean countersinks in wood and they're easily controlled, no nearly getting as deep as you want and then having the bit pull itself 5mm deeper in a rush. :o

If you want something for a decking job these - P N Drill Countersink TCT CUT Smart FOR 8G 10G 12G 14G | eBay (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/P-N-Drill-Countersink-TCT-Cut-Smart-For-8G-10G-12G-14G-/331923946315?var=&hash=item4d48357b4b:m:m8WOi8wUbgx34K8nNqpCGGA) - are the ducks guts. :2tsup: The drill bits and the countersink are tungsten carbide tipped and the depth stop is adjustable. You can get a very good deal on them with the screws on eBay. I recently bought a 1,000 50mm 10g SS screws and the tool on eBay for $90 delivered. Bunnings wanted $146 for the same thing and the screws I got were Hobson NOT Zenith.

Plus one on the cross hole countersinks. P&N are the ones I use. There are cheaper out there, but the ones I have used wonder a bit.

I hesitate to recommend this but I bought a Festool CS tool many years ago and despite drilling and countersinking at least 15,000 holes in decking jobs and other assorted stuff it is still sharp. I cringed when I paid $70 for it but do not regret it at all now.

What I have noticed here is that if the CS is metric you MUST use a metric bit. The reverse is true for imperial. If needed you can flatten the side of the bit shank with a grinding wheel. It works well.

After trying several types including supposed Ti coated, I got these mainly for the price as I thought if they are sh*t, i'm not losing much.

6X 3 Edge 90° HSS Chamfer Chamfering Reamer Cutter END MILL Drill Countersink | eBay (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/161388407908?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT)

Result, i am happy with them, nice and sharp, but all the previous were rubbish, including a set of "frost", so there may be better out there but for $13 you have nothing to lose - except 3 weeks waiting for them to arrive.

Thanks for the information, I think the wish list just got bigger. For the moment I'll settle for grinding one side of a new set of bits.

These P&N ones (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/P-N-Drill-Countersink-TCT-Cut-Smart-For-8G-10G-12G-14G-/331923946315?var=&hash=item4d48357b4b:m:m8WOi8wUbgx34K8nNqpCGGA) are by far the best I have used. They give the cleanest holes out of all the ones I have tried. I use them on melamine, ply, hardwoods, mdf, and they always give a super clean hole at the exact depth it's set at.

And I use this 5 Flute style (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/2PC-5-Flute-Countersink-Drill-Bit-Set-82-Counter-Sink-Chamfer-Cutter-1-4-Shank-/351479987682?hash=item51d5d6fde2:g:0KYAAOSw3ydVzD~a) for metal (not those specific ones, just that style).

I have tried everything else, and that's the costly (I have a box of about 15 countersinks somewhere here that will never get used again) conclusion I came to. :2tsup:

I have various countersink bits, and recently I bought this (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0055HPIOQ/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) from Amazon when I was buying a few other things. They are sharp and they cut cleanly, comparable to those 50 bux ones sold here.

justonething, that's the type of countersunk tool I use, I've got plenty of countersinking bodies just need the bit's to slip into the bodies. The P&N Quickbits are the type of drill bit that I'm trying to source.
Cheers

It doesn't take much grinding. Remember you're only grinding a spot for the Allen screw to hold the drill bit in place.

To directly answer the question, I just use ordinary drill bits if the correct size and have had no problems at all.

Rockler supply these but they do not appear to have a flat machined in the shank Rockler/Insty-Drive Tapered Drill Bits and Countersinks-Replacement Tapered Drill Bits | Rockler Woodworking and Hardware (http://www.rockler.com/rockler-insty-drive-tapered-drill-bits-and-countersinks-replacement-tapered-drill-bits)

If it is indeed the same type, you don't need a quickbit but ordinary bit. See picture.

Well thanks again for your informed advice, much appreciated. I'll tighten the grub screws with a bit more oomph next time.
Cheers.

Hi HUON

The big green shed stock the replacement drills for the P&N TCT cut-smart countersinks. Not real cheap though. I'd be more inclined to follow the advice already given by others and grind a small flat on the shank of a standard twist drill and see how it goes.

I have several of these drill/countersink combo things but I've never found anything to rival the old Stanley Screw Mates. These are designed from the outset to drill both the pilot AND the clearance holes along with the countersink. If you are using traditional type screws then they are unbeatable.

They also make (made?) a Sink Mate; same idea but without the wide flange so that the screw head could be buried in a counterbored hole that could then be plugged.

Sorry; would post pictures/links but I'm stuck in an airport using the Coffee Club free WIFI which isn't really conducive to speedy posts!

Deckmax make a 3mm pilot drill bit with a flat section for their countersink and counterboring tools. And they're on the Gold Coast. Here's a link (http://www.deckmax.oxygenwebsite.com/newshop/products/2373/Drill_Bit_Pack.html).

I've got onto a USA company "W. L. Fuller Inc" who've quoted US$5 - US$6 each for reduced shank drill bits to use as pilot drills in wooden toy wheel cutter plus for a packet of 8 bits, US$23 postage.....Sound very reasonable to me and maybe worth others having a look at them if they can't find something local that suits...Cheers, crowie
