View Full Version : Gluing up a mitred trapezoid?

I'm making a Nelson bench which involves two trapezoid shaped leg pieces with mitres/bevels that obviously aren't at 90 degrees

I've got all the leg pieces cut but I'm a bit stumped on how to glue it up.

Has anyone attempted this or similar? My best (only) thought so far is to lay the pieces on edge on a ply board or similar and use wedges and a surrounding frame of screwed down timber to hold my pieces into the trapezoid shape while gluing (ie I'd use the wedges to supply clamping force)

Any better thoughts or insights gratefully received

Thanks in anticipation

I would glue it up on a flat surface. The boards on edge. Using a band clamp/strap clamp to bring the joints together.

Hi doncra,
If you have a ratchet strap that will also work well you would need to make up the correct angle corner blocks to suit you're angles. I have used mine at times when large clamps weren't available or extras were needed.

I second the above suggestions. A ratchet strap and some custom cauls.

I'd go with the wedges. That's how I clamped 4 panel doors. Only need wedges on 2 sides if the clamping frame is set at the correct angle. I would consider dowelling the joints to keep them registered. Glue makes things slippery initially and it can be hard too stop joints moving when pressure is applied.

Thanks all - ratchet strap worked an absolute charm - glad I didn't spend an age mucking around with clamps and wedgeshttp://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20161022/a57b040b1336035f0925517aaa37d1ac.jpg
