It was complicated or was it a case of simplicity? This week I had the pleasure to work with two forumites on a neat little job. Neat as in I liked it and there were lots of angles and little issues to deal with. And the two forum members were complicated aka James and simplicity aka Matt. Oh then there was DaveTTC aka Dave

Complicated might be so good as to post a before pic as I forgot to take one.

That was after much of the demolition. It was a six sided gazebo over a spa with perimeter decking. The decking was all that could be saved and this was fixed to the posts that were on stirups.

The six sided shape had uneven angles side to end. All the posts had a space of about 1380mm though one side was 37mm wider

The posts seen in the pic above run parallel to the side they are on and the pair on the other side. As such the beam could be measured at the base and allowance made for where the angles bicept.

First up I was told the posts are all one length and level. That is the posts we pulled out. So therefore the new posts could all be cut the same. Wrong

First beam went up cut as I described earlier. Then the second beam but the joint was open at the top. This could mean one of two things

1) bisected angle on beam one and or two had been cut out of square (not plumb)

2) the beams are not level.

It turned out to be option 2

Next job was to unbolt 7 of 8 posts and pack them all to match the highest post. Sone only a few mm. One was over 30 mm.

Now we were moving along nicely. Did you notice in previous post the pic shows how we aligned the posts?

To align the posts I measured the gap at the bottom between the posts then put a spacer in at the top

http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20161025/027f680f8df1d24a3fd0af481dd44b77.jpg

A strap around the posts and a stick thrru the middle a little like you would on an old bow saw does the trick. Everything held in place till the beam is measured, cut and fixed

The spacer was cut to the shortest measurement and used a spacer where the pairs of posts were further apart
