View Full Version : Live centre bearing

Does anyone have any ideas as to how to remove the bearing from the live centre shown? The manual shows it to be three pieces: shaft, bearing and centre. Obviously, in use the bearing gets pushed in tightly.
It has a MT2 shaft and apart from about an 8mm straight section at the end there is precious little to grab onto.
Holding the outer circumference would defeat the purpose, only serving to press it against the bearing. Or are these just considered disposable?
Thanks for any insights
Chris

Yeah I battled with an old one of those for ages until I just decided to buy a new one, never did figure out a way to get the bearing out.

Hi Chrism3,
The only way I can think of removing said Bearing is to hold it somehow & quickly Heat the outer casing.
If there is a hole through to the bearing, all you need then is a rod to knock it out.

I reckon they are disposable, a good replacement bearing will cost nearly as much as a new live centre.
having said that, I have had 20 years service from some of my centres.

Hi Chris,
Knock the top or cap off from the bearing, knock bearing off the morse tapper shaft. press new bearing on and replace the cap.I have replaced several over the years. New bearings are available from your local bearing supplier.

Chucky,
what did you hold the shaft with while you knocked the cap off?

Try and get a C series Bearing with the rubber/plastic seals. I just did my nova multi Centre and a hydraulic press makes the job easier.

Try removing it using a wet paper towel! :o:U:doh:

Just watched the video, very interesting method, and a surprise to see what was inside. Note that the live centre was for a metal turning lathe, I wouldn't think that a woodturning lathe centre would be as robust, but same principal.
Thanks for posting Bohdan.

Can't use a press - I need a puling action !
Or some way of holding the shaft while I knock the cap off, as Chucky suggests.

Drill a hole 50 - 75mm in from the end of a piece of stout timber 25mm thick X 75mm wide the size of the cap. Make a saw cut out to the end. Drill a hole for a bolt that would squeeze the hole across the slot. Put live center in hole and grab by tightening nut on bolt.

Put some cardboard or rags for the Morse taper to land on and whack the timber on a saw horse, or anvil, or bench edge, taper side down. With luck the cap will stay in timber and the rest land in the cushion. If it does not separate easily put penetrating oil in the seam between the cap and bearing, and the bearing. Let soak over night and try again. That failing, heat the cap with a heat gun, hair dryer, or propane torch and try again. Failing that buy a new live center.

Do the same to remove bearing from taper if cap comes off. If taper comes off leaving bearing in cap, pack hole in bearing full of grease and using a shaft to fit snugly in bearing drive shaft into bearing. Pressure on grease will drive bearing up shaft. Add grease and keep driving. Put rag around bearing and shaft as grease will squirt through bearing.

I have one of these that is pretty decent:

Thanks Paul. If I can get the cap off I shouldn't have a problem getting the bearing off the shaft, because I have a couple of bearing pullers.
I'll try the method you suggest for the cap.

Chris

Paul,
tried that method - no luck, and the cap kept slipping. I then drilled a counterbored hole so that the cap would not pass through, but the bearing could have. I think the shaft has moved slightly, but the bearing hasn't moved at all. I'm leaving it to soak overnight before one last try.
