Newbie Hello and qn abt old wood

Hello all...I'm a newbie from Australia [emoji854] (err...I'm assuming this isn't an Australian site in which case [emoji41]).
I bought an old timber school desk...looks like it's had poor care for abt fifty years...lots of graffiti, a bit of splitting. Should I condition the wood before I burn it, or only after? I just want to put an image in the centre of it. I'll attach a photo below. Also, any suggestions what I shld condition it with? TIA

I would expect that you would apply any conditioning agents after you do your pyrography, but I will leave that up to the more experienced to comment.
